  • Lahinch Surf Shop | Things To Do In Lahinch | Discover Lahinch

Lahinch in County Clare, Ireland, has been a centre for surfing in Ireland since the late 1960's. The local club in Lahinch hosted the European surf championships in 1972. Tom Buckley became interested in surfing in the late 1980's. It all started for Tom and Rosemary Buckley as a result of a chat in a pub in Liscannor, County Clare, which led Rosemary and Tom to buy the original shop on the prom in Lahinch in 1989, which became the first dedicated surf shop in Ireland. - Thanks to Colm Toner from Kilshanny Garden centre for the inspiration and Gerry Collins from Great Outdoors Dublin for pointing us in the right direction for suppliers. Many people thought we had lost the plot. We had some very strange reactions including people trying to back horses as they thought that the word Surf was really Turf. However, the shop prospered and we eventually rebuilt on the same site, which is now our current shop. Over time, we have introduced many brands to Ireland, most of whom have stayed with us and given us an excellent service We hope to continue to support surfing in this area by supplying equipment of a high quality to all surfers of every standard and helping the local club in whatever way we can. We operate a trade in policy for children’s wetsuits and some good condition surfboards against new equipment. This gives many the chance to obtain good used childrens wetsuits and boards. We also sell surboards on consignment for the local surfers who prefer to let us deal with potential buyers on their behalf The shop was so popular for surf info that we started the daily surf report on the web along with a live webcam. We continue to stock the best quality surfboards, wetsuits, fashion and accessories The late Tom Buckley revived West Coast Surf Club, one of the oldest surf clubs in the country, to help build the surf community around Lahinch. Tom and Rosemary's daughter Eileesh is regularly involved with Irish Surfing, including serving as it's first female chairperson in 2011 after many years as it's treasurer. Their son Thomas is a surfer and product designer developing a range of keepsakes for the shop. For the first decade and a half of the shop's existence we provided surf lessons and equipment rentals but with the opening of a dedicated surf school in the village we decided to concentrate solely on retail. There are now a number of surf schools in the village of varying sizes and offering a variety of equipment rentals. Today the shop is still owned and operated by Rosemary Buckley with her daughter Eileesh and son Thomas. We have one further permanent staff member, Cliodhna Fawl and during the summer we have had a variety of cousins and local surfers as seasonal employees. The hotel has 30 rooms and is designed and managed to a four star international hotel standard. The style of the hotel is modern, and we like to be as informal as possible while maintaining high levels of service and hotel keeping. Many of our guests are golfers who enjoy the rugged links terrain at Lahinch and return often to play. We also are very close to the wonderful landscape of the Burren and The Cliffs of Moher as well as the beach and surf at Lahinch. The Wild Atlantic Way is at our doorstep and we are delighted to assist travellers with their sightseeing plans. Good food is always a staple at the hotel, with delicious breakfasts prepared individually each morning, and sumptuous evening dinners five evenings a week. < Previous < Next Important Links Privacy Policy Terms & Conditions info@discoverlahinch.ie Want to get involved? • VL Restaurant | Eat & Drink in Lahinch | Discover Lahinch

The food at VL Restaurant can be categorised as fine dining in the modern sense. The preferences of our guests are foremost in the selection of dishes. Our meats are sourced away from Lahinch as the local farming pattern is not given to finishing and fattening, which is performed better on lusher pastures in the Midlands of Ireland. Fish is available locally and mostly caught off the coast at Carrigaholt. Supplies are in high demand always and we try our best to obtain variety. Halibut, Monkfish and Black Sole are regular menu items. Fresh Crab meat is a delight as is the Smoked Salmon produced in the Burren. We choose sustainability over variety and keep the selection to what is native and available on the day. Our cousins, the Garvey family produce the wonderful St Tolas goats cheese nearby in Inagh. The local sea shores provide samphire, sea lettuce, sea aster and sea weed varietals that are picked for us by Maree Vaughan. The Pearce family in Cooraclare provide potatoes, some salad leaves and eggs. We have specialist fine ingredient suppliers such as Redmonds Fine Foods, La Rousee and Pallas Foods. Fresh Vegetables are sourced by Richardsons of Limerick. Trips to the local markets are made often for garnishes and other produce. Our breads are all baked daily in our kitchen by Luckas and we are always happy to share a recipe with you if you ask!! Textures and tastes are a very important element of our presentation. This is food to be enjoyed over a leisurely dinner. We include an Amuse and Middle course to assist the diner in appreciating the evening with us. A modest wine list accompanies our menu with wines chosen by Michael in conjunction with our suppliers, Tindall Wines, Febvre, The Vineyard, Longueville Wines and Tyrrell wines.
